Who’s culture is it anyway well its everybody’s. America the great and powerful country that it is. Is collectively the combination of many nations crumbled together into one great big ball of society. to give credit to one single culture should be a crime everyone has had a big role to play. This passage was nothing more than a couple of big words jumbled together trying to dissect the America way of life. I was lost in translation but the one thing that stuck out to me was a multiculturalism America. Which is true in a sense if you think about it . Other than that he pretty much lost me and just kept rambling on about other useless opinions that he had. Overall this passage was very short and still lost my attention. it was probably one of the worst passages i read all year . I mean maybe if he would have tried to let us know what he meant by all of this. He never really got to the point and it was almost borderline raciest really pissed me off. so i give this passage two thumbs down and if i had another thumb it would go down too.

Posted in Uncategorized on April 23, 2008 by llcooljkReading the life story of K. Oanh Ha was very moving. Coming to America at six on a boat must have been tough on a young Vietnamese girl.I thought it was really funny how when she first got here all she wanted to do was be an American. But later was so in touch with her Vietnamese side. I could really relate to her with strict parents that wont let you do anything. i also used college as an escape from them. i thought it was pretty cool how she went back to Vietnam to get to know her roots where she came from. I would love to do something like that it almost seems like your filling in the pieces of your life when you go back. You also get a great sense of pride just being in your home country. overall it was a good story i really felt a culture clash between her and her parents there strong traditions and her trying to break out of her shell and just fit in.
Bad Luck
Posted in Uncategorized on April 18, 2008 by llcooljkAmericans that fear they will be apart of a terrorist act are the ones that are least likely to. Jeffrey writes people overestimate the risk of crimes they have never experienced. its really hard to pin point when and where a terrorist attack may happen. that is why i think people should just live there lives. I mean they are completely random it is so hard to predict how its going to happen. you could take all the precautions in the world and open your mail and just die. It really sounds bad but is completely true if you think about it. that is one of the main reasons that i am not concerned about the whole situation going on today. when i turn on the TV and i see that they just upgraded the terrorist color to tangerine i could care less. I’m just going to keep living my life care free because you cant predict the future. so don’t tip toe around thinking that a planes going to crash into your house.
AIDS IN AFRICA
Posted in Uncategorized on April 16, 2008 by llcooljkWith thirteen millions deaths and no cure aids is the most dangerous virus in the world. Aids is really getting out of control in Africa where education over the virus is not being spread around fast enough. Over one-third of Zimbabwe population is infected and is spreading all over Africa. Most cases of HIV are directly connected to poverty the poor population are way more vulnerable than richer more educated people proven fact. Not only that women are 5 times more vulnerable than young men. and minorities are more vulnerable than majorities. I think we need to educate more than anything. if we could just warn them of the dangers of this deadly virus we could help minimize the distribution and spread of this disease. Developed nations must take action to Africa perhaps more than any other nation. It is one of the poorest nations and part of that is because no one seems to care enough about the African community largely because of their lack in collateral. AIDS is a horrible virus that is taking over Africa to the point where Africans just live day to day not caring at all whether or not they’ll live past 50 because their is no hope left. We need to put hope back into the African people by showing we care or else Africans will reach their demise sooner than we think. AIDS may not be curable just yet but we can minimize the rate that it is multiplying. We must care so that the African people too will start thinking about the future and living for it than living for tomorrow.
life on the global assembly line
Posted in Uncategorized on April 14, 2008 by llcooljkI was very moved by this passage it put the world into perspective for me. How far advanced American is to third world countries. they are subjected to way more harsh conditions to grow up in. you could start work at six years old which is kind of scary to think about for me. i could never imagine wakening up at six and having to make soccer balls i would probably be watching cartoons instead. my heart really goes out for kids in those condition its terrible. That is why i think us as Americans should do more to prevent acts like theses from going on. i also think that are corporations should cut back the dictatorship over these third world countries. What really surprised me was most corporation target countries that will guarantee no interference from health and safety inspectors, trade unions, or even freelance reformers. It’s sad to know that our world is becoming a global market. Countries are used and misused over and over again for cheap labor and what cheaper way to get production started then to target young children to work for minimum wage. America needs to stop this crisis just like it tries to stop other conflicts across the world such as poverty and war. But the problem is America is benefiting from this cheap labor. America needs to stop before it loses its reputation and needs to morally help those nations that need help. Work should be a way of providing essentials with savings not working for minimal products needed to survive. Dictating woman and young children to work in these conditions is unmoral and should be stopped. Women are not weaker beings and should not be treated as such. You can not walk over woman like they are only here to provide labor for corporations. This is both sexist and unjust. How would you like your daughter making soccer balls because it is required of her to survive. Doesn’t sound good does it? This must be stopped and America needs to be the nation to help stop it not participate in it.
response to the speakers from Africa
Posted in Uncategorized on March 28, 2008 by llcooljkI thought the speakers from Africa were really fascinating. I really didnt relize that english is the main langange in some of the countries. When the told me about how they gained there independence from Britain it was clear.
after hearing there stories about there first time being in America its funny how simlar our countries are. And how the media betrays Africa as being all helpless and riding on elephants wearing cloths. when all along they cities just like us its sad but true. The one thing that i admired about them is they so a true sense of pride in where they come from.
